Out with old and in with the new reusable!

This summer, Island Eats launched a program which features reusable containers at local restaurants in hopes of cutting down single-use waste and promoting a more sustainable community.

Founded by Jessica Mason, Island Eats is an exclusive membership that allows you to order takeout and receive it in a reusable, stainless steel bowl. As a member, you receive a wooden card for the (similar to a token). So, how does it work? It’s simple.

When you order from an establishment that is part of Island Eats, you inform them you’re a member and would like your food in the stainless steel Island Eats container. Upon pick-up you hand over your card/token in exchange for your order. After you’ve enjoyed your meal, you bring your Island Eats bowl to any participating establishment and receive a card/token for your next order!

Worried about proper sanitation? Island Eats is doing their part by using their electric car, a Volvo XC40 to transport the reusable containers to commercial washing and sanitization facilities before redistributing them for another round of use. Island Eats does however ask that members rinse their bowls before returning.

As an Island that’s full of workers, beach-goers and overall takeout lovers this initiative is a wonderful way to cut down on waste. As of now there’s only one single size bowl available but Island Eats hopes to expand their range, offering more choices to restaurants and customers!

The local restaurants that are a part of the program include:

Island Eats has had a great response, selling out of memberships shortly after launching the pilot program in addition to reaching their restaurant cap for the 2022 summer season. With such a positive response, they hope to partner with more restaurants in the future to create a sustainable, eco-friendly, ocean-minded, waste-free community on Martha’s Vineyard.

The membership fee is $25, which gives you access to one stainless steel bowl and wooden token card.
